showtime style tutorial
What I'm using: Photoshop CS3
Level: Advanced
In this tutorial, you will create what is known as a showtime style sign.
Click here to see what you will be making.
Before we begin, please define
this,
this,
this,
this, and
this(just the top one) as brushes.
Also, define
this and
this(this is a circle. just drag it to photoshop. it will work.) as patterns.
This is the color scheme I will be using.
First, you will need to cut out(to cut out, use the lasso tool or the pen tool) a site model picture or get a psd.
Here is my cut out if you want to use it.
Next, use the pen tool to make a thick stroke around the site model.
This is what it should look like.
After you make the border around the site model, right click, and click "make selection" and hit "ok."
You should now see a selection around your site model like
this.
Make a new layer and drag it all the way to the bottom. Fill it with the gradient of the four colors of the color scheme, while you still have the outer stroke selected.
This is how it looks so far.
Now, use the words brush I gave you before, in white, over that gradient.
This is how your sign should look as of now.
Okay, so, now we are going to stroke the site model and the outer stroke. Duplicate the site model layer three times. Name the top duplicate "sm white stroke" the second one "sm gradient stroke" and the third one "sm pattern stroke."
This is how your layers should look so far.
Stroke "sm white stroke" with
these settings.
Stoke "sm gradient stroke" with
these settings.
Stroke "sm pattern stroke" with
these settings and drop shadow that same layer with
these settings.
Do the same with with the outer stroke. Duplicate it 3 times, and name the top one "outer white stroke" the second one "outer gradient stroke" and the third one "outer pattern stroke."
This is how your layers should look.
Stroke "outer white stroke" with
these settings.
Stroke "outer gradient stroke" with
these settings.
Stroke "outer pattern stroke" with
these settings and drop shadow that same layer with
these settings.
This is how your sign should look, so far.
To make it easier on yourself, so that we don't have a huge mess of layers, go to layer-merge visible. You should now have ONE layer. To avoid confusion, name it "sm and outer."
Make two new layers. The one right under the "sm and outer," name "vectors" and the one under that name "vector bg."
Your layers should look like
this.
Now, fill "vector bg" (make sure you highlight it) with the darker pink color.
Highlight the "vectors" layer, and using the color WHITE (this is important), put your vector brush in that layer, but put the brush down three times because it is a little see through, and it might get messed up.
Your sign should look like
this now.
Take your magic wand (make sure your "vectors" layer is highlighted) and select the vectors. Make sure your magic wand is on
these settings (anti-alias and sample all layers).
Use about a 19px brush to color in the vectors with the other colors (light pink, light purple, and the darker purple).
This is how it should look after you colored them in.
You can deselect now. Double click on the "vectors" layer and stroke the vectors with
these settings, pattern overlay them with
these settings (using the circle I gave you before), and drop shadow
them with
these settings.
Your sign should look like
this now.
This next part is very confusing so please read it carefully. We are going to fill in the blank, dark pink parts of the vectors. Take your magic wand and make sure it is on
these settings (anti-alias and contiguous).
Now, select the layer "vectors"(please make sure you are on this layer or it will not work) and click on all of the darker pink spots after the darker purple vectors like
this.
After they are selected, we will be putting the pixel brush I gave you earlier in them. BUT! You have to switch back to the "vector bg" layer before you put them in the pink parts.
This is how it would look selected with the pixels in it.
Do the same thing for the darker pink spots after the light purple vectors. Use the music notes for this part. Remember to use anti alias and contiguous, select on the "vectors" layer, and put the brush in the "vector bg" layer.
After you did all of that, it will look like
this.
Do the same thing, AGAIN, with the background spots after the light pink vectors. Use the hollister brush for this part, and once again remember to use anti alias and contiguous, select on the "vectors" layer, and put the brush in the "vector bg" layer.
If you don't know how to rotate a brush, just go to window-brushes-brush tip shape and use the little arrow to rotate your hollister brush for the background.
This is how it would look selected with the hollister brush in it.
Now merge the layers, add some text and maybe a border and you're finished!
Here is my final product.
